One great way to avoid bugs in the pantry is to practice good sanitation. Wipe your countertops down with a disinfectant cleaner. Sweep and vacuum food debris from floors, pantries, and cabinets. When you’re at the grocery store, double check that all your goods are well sealed and don’t have signs of gnaw marks from rodents or any other indication that a pest has tampered with it. This all might sound really simple, but it’s not necessarily common knowledge. Here are additional key tricks to keeping pests away.
Have you been hearing some creatures stirring this holiday season? Got signs of mice or rats? Rodents like mice and rats are prevalent this time of year in these colder months. They’re looking for a warm, dry place just like us to cozy up for the winter. Read the graphic below to see if you may have any holiday invasions, and if you think you do, contact us here. We’re always happy to help.
Mice only need a little bit of food and nesting material to make themselves at home. To discourage mice, remove all food sources by storing grains, pet food, and other dry goods in metal containers. Make sure mice won't find nesting material by storing all soft, fluffy materials like fabric, rugs, and blankets in heavy plastic or metal boxes. Mice will even chew up cardboard, paper, and lightweight plastics to make nests, though, so be sure you don't leave any lying around.
Rats have a powerful sense of smell. You can repel rats from your home and garden with scents they dislike, such as clover, garlic, onion, hot peppers containing capsaicin, house ammonia, used coffee grounds, peppermint, eucalyptus, predator (cat) scent, white vinegar, and citronella oil.
